The term almost exclusively refers to the central group of stars found in most spiral galaxies (see galactic spheroid). Approximately two-thirds of all spiral galaxies are thought to be barred spiral galaxies. RT esa: This NASA/ESA/CSA ESAWebb image depicts the barred spiral galaxy NGC 5068. Spiral galaxies have three visible parts: a Thin disk - Wikipedia composed of stars, gas, and dust a central bulgebulgeIn astronomy, a galactic bulge (or simply bulge) is a tightly packed group of stars within a larger star formation. Bars are found in about two thirds of all spiral galaxies. Barred spirals differ from normal spiral galaxies in that the arms of the galaxy do not lead all the way into the center, but are connected to the two ends of a straight bar of stars which contains the nucleus at its center. A barred spiral galaxy is a spiral galaxy with a central bar-shaped structure composed of stars. Spiral galaxies are surrounded by sparsely populated halos - roughly spherical regions above and below the plane of the discs. Spiral galaxies have a complex structure: a dense central bulge lies at the center of a rotating disc, which features a spiral structure that originates at the bulge. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy.įour categories are used to classify galaxies: spiral barred spiral elliptical and irregular. Lee and the PHANGS-HST Team What Is a Spiral Galaxy?Ī spiral galaxy typically has a rotating disc with spiral ‘arms’ that curve out from a dense central region. The inner parts of these two spirals trace the boundary. Tell-tale signs of recent star formation, these glowing regions lead to M61’s classification as a starburst galaxy. NGC 1097 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy believed to be interacting with the elliptical galaxy. As well as the usual bright bands of stars, the spiral arms of M61 are studded with ruby-red patches of light. These arms show large numbers of bright bluish knots which are active star-forming regions where, in some of them, very luminous and young stars can be. The luminous heart of the galaxy M61 dominates this image, framed by its winding spiral arms threaded with dark tendrils of dust.
